Heatwaves are reshaping summer travel. Here are the best 2026 coolcation destinations — cool-climate cities and coastlines where summer is still pleasant.

Misty fjord landscape with mountains in northern Europe

Why Coolcations Are Trending in 2026

Southern Europe summers are hitting 40°C+ with worrying regularity. Wildfires, packed cities, and exhausted infrastructure have pushed a growing share of travelers to swap the Mediterranean for cooler latitudes — what the industry now calls a "coolcation".

The appeal is simple: comfortable 15–22°C days, long daylight hours, dramatic landscapes, and far fewer crowds than the Med.

Northern Europe — The Classic Coolcation

Norwegian Fjords (Bergen, Ålesund, Tromsø)

Summer highs of 16–20°C, midnight sun in the north, and some of Europe's most cinematic scenery. Not the cheapest option — expect $150–220/night for hotels — but unbeatable for landscape lovers.

Iceland

Reykjavik in July averages 13°C. Ring Road road trips, hot springs, and 20+ hours of daylight. Budget $180/day including a rental car shared between two.

Faroe Islands

Genuinely off-grid feel, summer temps of 12–14°C, and dramatic cliffs. Flights via Copenhagen or Edinburgh.

Scottish Highlands & Isle of Skye

Cool, green, and walkable. July averages 17°C. Excellent value compared to Scandinavia.

Baltic Coolcation — Underrated Value

Estonia (Tallinn) & Latvia (Riga)

Pleasant 20°C summers, medieval old towns, and daily budgets around $70–90 including a mid-range hotel.

Finland (Helsinki & the Lakes)

Lake cabins, sauna culture, and 18–22°C days. Helsinki is pricier than Tallinn, but the lake districts (Saimaa, Päijänne) are great value.

Alpine Coolcation

Slovenia (Lake Bled, Bohinj, Triglav)

Mountain lakes, summer hikes, and Italian-quality food at half the price. Highs around 24°C in valleys, much cooler at altitude.

Switzerland & Austria mountain towns

Pricey but cool — Interlaken, Zermatt, Hallstatt, and Innsbruck all stay in the low 20s even at peak summer.

Dolomites, Italy

Yes, Italy can still be a coolcation if you go high enough. Alta Badia and Cortina sit at 1,200–1,600 m and rarely break 25°C.

Beyond Europe

Patagonia in their winter (June–August)

Crisp, clear, ski-season Argentina and Chile. Bariloche and Ushuaia are spectacular.

New Zealand's South Island (June–August)

Their winter, your summer escape. Queenstown, Wanaka, Tekapo.

Canada — Vancouver Island & Newfoundland

Pacific Northwest summers cap around 22°C. Coastlines, whale watching, hiking.

Japan — Hokkaido

While Tokyo bakes at 35°C, Sapporo and Furano sit at 22–26°C with lavender fields and excellent food.
